The Ultimate Senior Guy Picture Guide for Eastern Kentucky Moms

Senior year sneaks up fast. And if you’re searching for an Eastern Kentucky senior guy photographer, you probably have questions your son isn’t exactly rushing to answer. What should he wear. What should he bring. Will he feel awkward. This guide gives senior moms a practical plan for photos that actually feel like their sons.

I know what it feels like to be the mom of a senior guy. I’ve had one myself, and I vividly remember the stress of shopping for outfits that looked like him while also showing his love for football.I also have photographed over 2,000 High School Seniors since 2003, so (doing my flex) I know guys typically don't love the idea of shooting senior pictures.

An Eastern Kentucky senior guy photographer should help with more than choosing a location. Senior guys need clear outfit guidance, ideas for sports and hobbies, natural posing, and editing that still looks like them. The goal is simple. Give Mom photos she’ll treasure without making her son feel like the session wasn’t made for him.

On a recent photoshoot with Jett Outlaw from Letcher Central (below), we wanted to make sure and show his artistic side with his guitar, while showing his love for football.

Why senior guy photography needs its own approach

Here’s the thing. A lot of senior boys aren’t spending August building Pinterest boards for senior pictures.

Mom usually starts the conversation.

She knows this year matters. She sees graduation coming, even if her son is more concerned about football practice, his truck, gaming, golf, or what’s happening Friday night. Seniors in Eastern Kentucky, in particular, have that country boy attitude when it comes to taking pictues, but they do it for their mom. 

And she wants photographs of who he is right now.

Not a version of him that somebody else created.

That distinction matters when choosing an Eastern Kentucky senior guy photographer. Guys often walk into senior pictures with different expectations. Some are excited. Some are willing because Mom asked. And some would happily be finished in ten minutes.

I know that going in. 

So I don’t need your son to arrive knowing how to pose or what to do with his hands. That’s my job.

What should a senior guy wear for pictures?

Start with clothes he’d actually wear.

Sounds obvious, right.

But senior pictures aren’t the best time to turn your son into somebody he’s never been. If he lives in jeans, bring jeans. If he likes a clean button down, pack it. If he practically lives in his team gear, we’ll make room for that too. 

For most senior guys, I like variety.

Bring one dressier outfit

This doesn’t have to mean a suit, although a suit can absolutely work if that fits him.

Think dress pants or good jeans with a button down. Add a jacket if that’s his thing. Boots or clean dress shoes can finish it.

This gives Mom and Grandma the more traditional senior portrait they’re hoping for.

And yes, Mom, you’re allowed to want one.

Bring one casual outfit

This is usually where his personality starts showing up.

Jeans. A favorite shirt. Sneakers. Boots. A hoodie. A jacket he wears constantly.

Ask yourself one question. If his friends saw this outfit, would they say, yep, that’s him?

If the answer is yes, pack it. 

Bring something for the studio

A simple studio outfit gives us another direction without requiring him to bring half his closet.

Solid shirts, jackets, denim, school gear, or something with a little structure can all work. We’ll decide what makes sense based on what he brings and what he actually likes wearing.

How many outfits should senior guys bring?

I’d rather have choices than discover halfway through that the shirt we needed is hanging at home.

So bring options.

A good starting point is:

• One dressier outfit
• One everyday casual outfit
• One studio option
• One sports or activity outfit
• A letterman jacket, jersey, uniform, or school T-shirt, something with school colors
• One extra shirt or jacket for an easy change

You don’t necessarily have to use everything.

We can look at what you brought and build combinations that make sense. That takes some pressure off Mom and your senior.

Because nobody needs a wardrobe argument five minutes before leaving the house.

AND DON'T FORGET THE BELTS!  The number one thing left at home is the belt for jeans and dressy outfit. It happens all the time I have to take my husband Keith or son's belt from home. Thank goodness I live close, LOL. 

Your Eastern Kentucky senior guy photographer should ask what he’s into

This might be the biggest part of the whole guide.

Senior pictures shouldn’t only tell us what your son wore during senior year. They should leave clues about who he was.

What did he spend his time doing?

What could he talk about for an hour?

What has been part of his high school story?

Sports are an obvious answer for many Eastern Kentucky seniors. But they’re nowhere near the only answer.  

One of my seniors from last year was into Star Wars and we used that in the studio part of his shoot. 

Sports can absolutely be part of the session

If he plays baseball, bring the bat, glove, ball, jersey, hat, and anything else that belongs to his experience.

Basketball player. Bring the ball and jersey.

Football. Bring the football, jersey, pads or other meaningful gear.

Golf. Clubs, glove, balls, team clothing.

And don’t forget that letterman jacket.

The point isn’t to pile every piece of equipment into one photograph. It’s to have the right pieces available when we need them. 

One recent senior wanted to show ALL the meaningful baseball jerseys from childhood, all-stars, plus high school jerseys. I LOVE his this turned out for Grant, Pikeville Class of 2027.

But what if he isn’t an athlete?

That's absolutely OK!

We’ve still got plenty to work with.

Maybe it’s theater. Chess. Gaming. Video games. Star Wars. Music. Hunting. Fishing. Cars. Trucks. Books. Technology. Art. A job he’s proud of. 

After 20 years I've just about photographed every hobby. I had a Breathitt County Senior bring his chess board.

The interest doesn’t have to make sense to everybody else.

It matters because it makes sense to him.

And ten years from now, that seemingly small detail might be exactly what brings senior year rushing back.

What should a senior guy bring to his photo session?

Bring more than clothes.

I want you to think about objects connected to his life right now. That might include sports equipment, his letterman jacket, awards, hobby items, a musical instrument, gaming items, or something connected to the plans he’s making after graduation.

Clean shoes matter too. I once had a mom bring one brown shoe and one black shoe. She asked could I make the shoes the same color. I said no, but I can make the picture black and white and that's what we did.

Bring the shoes for each outfit instead of assuming one pair works with everything. Toss in an extra belt if his dress clothes need one.

And Mom, bring the things he’ll forget, (Ahem, the belt).

What about his car or truck?

If his vehicle is a big part of his senior year, tell me.

For some guys, that truck represents hours spent working to pay for it. Maybe he and his dad worked on the vehicle together. Maybe he’s already put more hours into that car than he’ll ever admit.

That belongs in the conversation.

(I told my son I would buy him a truck if he made good grades! No lie, he said he'd just take the car. LOLOLOLOL Uggg.)

The same goes for equipment, instruments, family property, or another meaningful piece of his life.

This is where senior photography gets personal.

Not complicated. Personal.

Will he know how to pose?

Nope, probably not.

And he doesn’t need to.

One of the biggest concerns I hear from moms is some version of, he hates having his picture taken.

That’s okay.

I’m not expecting him to arrive with modeling experience. I’ll give him direction. We’ll keep things moving. And I’m looking for positions and expressions that feel natural for a senior guy.  I can typically say something stupid on cue to get a guy to relax. 

No feminine posing.  I know a guy's body language and the tilt of his head to keep him looking masculine, strong lines, strong jaw, strong images. 

No trying to force him into somebody else’s personality.

No making him wonder what on earth he’s supposed to be doing.

Strong. Relaxed. Confident.

Still him.

Will my son’s senior pictures be naturally edited?

This matters.

Especially when you’re choosing someone to photograph your son.

My goal with editing isn’t to turn a teenage boy into a different person. Skin still needs to look like skin. His features should still belong to him. And when you get the finished photographs, you should recognize your son immediately. 

You DO NOT want him to look like he has on makeup. I see photographers taking AI too far, one preset in particular making guys look like they are wearing lipstick. I cringe when I see this. You want to see he has pores! 

We remove blemishes, fly away hairs, etc. He will look better, but not feminine. 

Temporary blemish before picture day?

That doesn’t need to become part of his senior story forever.

But I’m not interested in changing the things that make him himself.

Natural editing matters because these photographs have a longer life than an Instagram post with some trendy preset.

I always edit a picture of my son, Zane, when I learn a new editing technique. This way I know what it really does to hair and skin. If I'm happy then you will be too.

They’re going on your wall.

They’re getting handed to grandparents.

And years from now, they’ll still be part of your family.

What should moms look for when choosing a senior photographer?

Look past a photographer’s best three social media posts.

Look for consistency.

Can they photograph guys comfortably? Do the seniors still seem like themselves? Is there variety from one senior to another? Can they work with sports, hobbies, dressier clothing, casual clothing, and a teenager who may not arrive thrilled about being photographed?

Then look at the experience.

Does the photographer help before the session?

Do you know what to bring?

Can you ask wardrobe questions?

Do you feel like someone has a plan?

DO THEY COMMUNICATE WITH YOU IN A TIMELY MANNER?

DO THEY PRINT YOUR SON'S BEAUTIFUL PORTRAIT AND HAVE IT READY TO HANG WHEN YOU PICK IT UP?

DO THEY run a GOOD BUSINESS and have good customer service if something goes wrong?

Do they guarantee their work?

That’s where confidence comes from.

Not because every senior boy suddenly becomes excited about planning pictures. But because Mom doesn’t have to figure out the whole thing by herself.

Moms usually walk through my studio doors with a little bit of an idea of what they want and just tell me to take over and make it all happen. I'm HONORED to!

Why senior pictures matter even when he says he doesn’t care

He might not care right now.

You do.

And that counts.

Senior year is full of lasts that don’t announce themselves. The last football season. The last first day of high school. The last homecoming. The last year his backpack lands in the same spot after school. The last high school skip day. The last field day. 

Then graduation comes.

Plans change. College starts. Work starts. He moves. His routines change.

So yes, take the pictures.

Include the jersey.

Bring the ridiculous thing connected to the hobby he loves.

Let him wear the outfit he’d choose himself.

And get the photograph Mom wants too.

There’s room for both. 

Senior pictures in Hazard and Eastern Kentucky can tell his story

Being an Eastern Kentucky senior guy photographer means I’m photographing kids whose lives aren’t interchangeable.

Their schools matter.

Their teams matter.

Their communities matter.

And the people who helped get them to senior year matter too. My favorite memory from last year was when one guy brought his grandpa. OF COURSE WE MADE HIM GET IN SOME PICTURES! I think his grandfather had more fun than anyone, he was a character!

That’s why I want to know what your son actually does.

Maybe senior year is football on Friday nights.

Maybe it’s rehearsals.

Maybe it’s hours spent gaming with the same friends he’s known forever.

Maybe he’d rather be on a golf course.

Maybe he’s happiest working on his truck.

Tell me.

Those details give us somewhere to start.

A simple senior guy packing checklist

A few days before the session, put everything in one place.

Try on the outfits.

Yes, actually try them on.

Senior guys grow. Dress pants apparently enjoy shrinking while hanging untouched in closets, especially during football season when guys are packing on that extra weight, LOL. 

Check shoes, belts, jerseys, jackets, uniforms, sports gear, and personal items.

Then ask him one more question.

What do you want to bring?

You might get a shrug.

Ask again later.

Sometimes the thing he finally names is the thing that makes the session his.

FAQ About Senior Guy Photography in Eastern Kentucky

How many outfits should my senior son bring?

Bring several options, including dressy, casual, studio, and sports or activity clothing. I’d rather have an extra shirt or jacket available than need something that’s sitting at home. We don’t have to use every piece. I typically recommend 5 OUTFITS or 5 plus sports or his hobby. But, I don't limit my seniors. I don't, however, want to drag the session out too long and have a bored senior guy. 

What if my son hates having his picture taken?

That’s not unusual. He doesn’t need to know how to pose or perform for the camera. I’ll direct him and keep things moving so he knows what to do next.

Can he bring sports equipment or hobby items?

Absolutely. Bring the things connected to his actual life, from jerseys and footballs to golf clubs, chess pieces, gaming interests, theater items, or his letterman jacket. 

Do you retouch senior boys?

I edit naturally. Temporary distractions can be addressed without changing who your son is. My goal is for the finished photographs to still look unmistakably like him.

When should we book senior pictures in Eastern Kentucky?

Earlier is better when you need a particular season or schedule around sports and school commitments. Senior calendars fill quickly once school starts.

Summer is best if they don't want to miss school.  We book early appointments or even after lunch and have guys out and back for football practice.

I love fall color for senior guy sessions. Nothing like boots and mountains together!
