Sadie Varney's Hazard KY Senior Pictures | Pikeville High School Class of 2026

There was pressure. Not because it was another senior session. Because every photo shoot we'd ever created together led to this one. And sometimes I REALLY get in my head when I know someone so well. It's like right before a play begins and I'm about to go on stage as an actor LOL.  I feel a little nervous. I don't want to disappoint. I know my. seniors have waited 4 years for this moment to begin. 

Some photographers meet their seniors a month before graduation. I met Sadie when she was five or six years old. Since then we've photographed family sessions, prom dresses, headshots, creative competition portraits, and moments that had nothing to do with school at all. By the time her senior year arrived, we weren't creating our first story together. We were finishing a chapter that had taken more than a decade to write.

Years of childhood sessions became a senior portrait experience that celebrated the woman Sadie has become. Only a photographer who has documented someone's life for more than a decade can tell this story from the inside, and it's been my privilege doing it! 

Here's a few of my favorites as I look back at all the portraits I created with Kevin, Stacy and Sadie. 

Long before senior year, Sadie became the face of one of my favorite personal projects.

I knew when I called Stacy, her mom, and told her my idea for this themed photoshoot, she would be on board because she was a hair dresser and we would use the images at her hair salon station! 

We created a portrait inspired by Beauty School Dropout from Grease. Hair rollers. A vintage outfit. Big personality. Even then, she understood that a portrait wasn't about posing. It was about becoming part of a story. That image went on to become a Professional Photographers of America Loan Collection image and was published, but the award isn't what I remember most. I remember watching this little girl completely own the camera.

Fast forward to senior year . . .

First we did her Senior Portraits at the studio.

Next we did a studio prom session and a mini prom session in Pikeville, KY on prom day.

Every prom session felt a little different. She grew more confident every year, but she never lost the same spark she'd had since she was a little girl. She knew how to step in front of the camera without pretending to be someone she wasn't. She was simply more of herself each time.

One thing that never changed was that Stacy and Kevin were always just around the corner. Whether it was family portraits, prom pictures, or senior sessions, they were there cheering her on. It became part of the tradition. We weren't just taking pictures. We were celebrating another milestone together. It's not every day you get to see Mom AND Dad show up for a prom photoshoot. 

Sadie always chose dresses that fit her personality instead of chasing whatever everyone else was wearing. She has always been a trend setter rather than a trend follower. Every year I couldn't wait to see what she'd bring because I knew it would feel like her.

By the time prom season rolled around, I looked forward to photographing Sadie as much as she looked forward to wearing the dress. We had built enough trust over the years that we could spend less time figuring things out and more time creating something new.

Senior year gave us two completely different stories. First came the bold red gown for her boyfriend's prom. Then came the soft pink dress for her own prom. Same girl. Two completely different chapters. That's one of the things I've always loved about photographing Sadie. She could tell a different story every time she stepped in front of my camera.

The location never mattered as much as the story we were telling that day.

Looking back now, I realize her prom sessions weren't just about documenting a dress or a dance. They were little markers along the road to senior year. Every prom, every family session, every creative portrait added another page to a story we've been telling together for more than a decade. By the time we photographed her senior portraits, we weren't introducing who Sadie was. We were celebrating who she had become.

Honestly, I couldn't have written a better ending if I'd tried. 

Because that's exactly what this session represents.

Every photograph we've created together has been another chapter. Family portraits. Prom dresses. Creative competition work. Headshots. Milestones. Then senior pictures.

Now another story begins. Nothing speaks sentimentality like "Toy Story". It was the perfect idea for Sadie. 

I've always believed Sadie is a trend setter, never a trend follower. She gets this trait from her gorgeous mom, Stacy. She doesn't walk into a room wondering what everyone else is doing. She walks in knowing exactly who she is, and we have truly collaborated over and over again to create magic. That's a rare gift, and it's one I've watched grow since she was a little girl.

I've photographed hundreds of seniors over the years, but very few have allowed me to watch every chapter unfold the way Sadie has. From little girl to graduate, from creative competition portraits to prom nights and now senior pictures, it's been one of the greatest privileges of my career.

When we finished the last session, there were hugs, tears, excitement. We all looked at each other, me, Keith, Stacy, Kevin and Sadie and promised this wouldn't our last photoshoot, just a pause until we meet again.

I don't know exactly where her next story will take her. I just hope I get to photograph a few more chapters along the way. Love you Sadie, Stacy and Kevin. Thank you for trusting me with a lifetime of memories.
